Unexploded Ordnance

Miscellaneous

There is a worldwide problem of unexploded ordnance (UXO). An estimated 40 million landmines and other UXO exist worldwide. A large percentage of these are in southeast Asia (Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam), and more than 100,000 people have died from UXO injuries since 1975 (1 out of 290 people in Cambodia have lost a limb). A primary factor in UXO deaths is metal detector use. In areas with large numbers of UXO, there also tend to be large amounts of scrap metal. Many scrap metal collectors use metal detectors, and, if caught digging up the wrong item, the consequences can be severe. See http://www.cpi.org/index.php .

This is also a problem at some of the closed military bases.
