Murkowski blocks proposed oil spill liability increase

Senator Lisa Murkowksi (R-AK) blocked Senate Bill S.3305, the “Big Oil Bailout Prevention Liability Act” yesterday.  This proposed law would cap BP’s (or any other oil company’s) liability at $10 billion, even if damages from an oil spill surpass that figure. The current liability cap under OPA is $75 million.

Murkowski, who became a Senator when appointed by her father, Frank (who resigned to become Alaska‘s governor), is well-known as a major recipient of oil and gas lobbying dollars (like father, like daughter).

Murkowski is clearly among the most anti-environmental justice legislators in Washington.
